Week 5 # Thing 12 : Web 2.0 Awards and Ning

September 21, 2007

Have made my way down the list of awards. Liked the variety. Impressed to see my nephews site Minti.com was awarded 2nd place in the Q & A section. This is a local site that provides parent answers and help. Also looked at Ning, but did not feel any need to sign up with any of them.

Week 5 # Thing 11 : Twitter Account

September 21, 2007

Against my better judgement I set up a Twitter account. Against my better judgement because I couldn't see anything there I wanted to be a part of. Truly, who cares about what the majority of these people are posting. Still I did as directed, set up an account and made my own pointless comment, at the same time feeling incredibly guilty, rather like I had been observed littering, because thats what it felt like, I was dropping pointless rubbish for other people.
I see that some Libraries are using Twitter to notify users of new books, answer Ref. questions and for promotions, but I feel I would need to be a lot more comnfortable with it all. I have dread of bombarding people with information they don't want, as I have a dislike of receiving it myself.

Week 5 # Thing 10 : Look at Online Image Generators

That Cat Can Dance

September 14, 2007

This obviously suits my childish sense of humour. I followed a few of the suggested links but then spent ages looking at all the links on the Generator Blog. I liked all the variety, and had to force myself to stop playing. Finally used JibJab to make my movie, I loved this site and changing the images around. Apologies to my colleagues, its all in the name of learning.

Thursday, September 13, 2007

From BoingBoing comes the Bookcase Chair. I loved this chair I came across, its picture is everywhere, but I particularly liked that people commented at length on its merits etc.

Week 4 # Thing 9 : Locate Library Related Blogs or News Feeds

September 13, 2007

Have continued to use Google Reader, but am still more comfortable with Bloglines. I do like the folders though. Have used all the suggested tools to look at feeds, and have just done some general Google searching. I have added ABC new headlines, which I like, and find it more relevant than the Reuters as well as Ruth Ostrows column. Also included How Stuff Works which I sometimes find useful for work, and Calvin and Hobbes for fun, though it doesn't beat I Can Has Cheezeburger, which I adore. Came across a great blog titled A Librarians Guide to Etiquette, which offers such gems as "Once the newness of your library job wears off, and unhappiness starts to set in, quantify your dissatisfaction by taking home anything that is not nailed down to the counters".

Week 4 #Thing 8 : Learn about RSS Feeds and set up a Blog Reader Account

07 September, 2007

Have set up a Bloglines account previously, which I use, so this time I thought I'd set one up with Google Reader. I thought the tutorials were very clear and I liked the Capture the Conversation audio. I found it easy to remember the things she had said, rather than reading endlessly. At this point in time I find Bloglines easier to use, but this may change when I become more familiar with Google Reader. I do feel as though I know more about Reader however, and how to use it, as I worked through the tutorials and FAQ's. But at the end of the day I only need one, so I will wait and see which I prefer and stick with.

Week 3. #Thing 6 : Flickr Mashups

September 03, 2007

This site was fun, and I enjoyed fiddling around with the cover. This Thing One and Thing Two made their first public appearance back in 1957, so they our quite a lot older than our Things.

Week 3. #Thing 5 : Exploring Flickr and Finding Friends

September 03, 2007
Yes Dior's Blog has morphed into The Cat in the Hat. Well the photos were handy and it did seem appropriate with all this talk 0f Thing 1 and Thing 2. Went to Flickr and found some more pictures of Cats in Hats. As you can see they are a very cheeky bunch when they get the chance. As far as Flickr is concerned...would I be a big user, I'm not sure. I don't have any desire to put my material out in the wide arena, which may defeat the purpose somewhat. And all of these things take so much time to explore.......

Week 2. #Thing 4 : Registering the Blog

September 01, 2007

Blog registered and away we go. Seems to be some sense of backtracking and inappropriate numbering here. Did Thing 3 (Set up Blog), but then had to backtrack to enter Thing 1 and Thing 2. Is this just me...have to keep checking the other blogs to see where we're up to! ...and that's the other thing. I as thinking of retitling but was too lazy, but once I got onto the track of Thing 1 and Thing 2 what else could I do. An avatar AND a photo in one week, you can't say I'm not learning.

Week 2. #Thing 3 : New Blogs and Avatars

August 28, 2007

Blog underway and avatar is in place. I want to add some pictures but may need to borrow the brains of others to get these in place. A few glitches in setting up the blog at home, I commenced going through Google, but the following day I could not log in and after multiple password changes and gnashing of teeth realised I could only access it using Firefox.

Week 1. #Thing 2 : Lifelong Learning

August 22, 2007

Have looked at the tutorial of the 71/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners and decided I should be one of those. Will this journey take me there...who knows. So far I can't even work out the numbering system, so I don't know if this bodes well for my Highly Successful Learning. I've had to backtrack numerous times and chop and change my blog, and I can't get the picture I want etc etc

Week 1. #Thing 1 : Discovery

August 21, 2007

Have read the introduction and am prepared for the sake of mankind, to give the 23 Things a try. Hopefully, by participating in this exercise I will see the merit of it all, and learn something as I go.
